Our History
Founded in
Dr Liam Conlon, MBE CBE, founded Star of the Sea youth club in 1952 when he was working as a doctor in Ballymena. The origins of the club were based on the Shore Road at the foot of St Mary's Greencastle Primary School. Over the next ten years Dr Conlon put together a plan to build a state of the art youth club on the same site which was officially opened in 1962. Star of the Sea at this point was predominantly a football club but the new premises enabled Liam to widen the scope of activities that the club could offer.
Martin Luther King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and in the same year in North Belfast Dr Liam Conlon had a simple idea - to form a basketball club. Aided and abetted by a young Bill McCotter, Star of the Sea Basketball Club was born and the rest, as they say, is history.
Today, as the 3-Time Irish National League Champions (, , ), we continue to build on decades of growth. Our commitment to excellence on and off the court has made us a dominant force in the All-Ireland League.
